Proofreader and copyeditor

I’ve been serving as an editor of academic publications for six years, including with the Japan Association of Language Teachers member publication The Language Teacher and the Asian ESP Journal. My work in these roles has given me a familiarity with the editorial process and issues of text flow that I’ve applied to helping authors in a number of different fields to prepare their papers for publication.

To date I’ve copyedited papers on implant dentistry, cardiology, gastroenterology, economics, and in my own field of EFL research. My experience comes through a combination of volunteer participation in journal communities, freelance work for the Asian Development Bank Institute, and through forging relationships with individual clients interested in submitting their papers to English language journals and conferences.

Philosophy

I like to buy my cars from my friend who I go cycling with on the weekends, and who owns a family run shop where his father worked before him and which will eventually be taken over by his son and perhaps even his grandson. When I buy my flour for my bread, I go to the family run wholesale supply store that stocks rye and graham flour locally. I could buy these things from the internet, or from a big box store, but I like to know who I’m dealing with, and that the same person will be there next week and the week after that in case I have a question or problem.

And I hold the same philosophy when I offer my own services. There’s not a team of people who check my email and sign with my name in replies. And there’s not a team of people who look through the papers I edit and proofread, consolidating their efforts among themselves; these are services I offer individually and that I devote my time and attention to, building a relationship with clients that is mutually beneficial. I can help the people I work with to get their papers successfully published, and that success is contagious, meaning those happy clients approach me again with new research and writing they hope to publish.

I’m the first to admit these people are customers, clients. But I also hope that through the friendly interactions we have as we work on multiple papers over time that I can come to count them as friends also. The kind of people I would be happy to have lunch with if I happen to be traveling through their town.

If you’re interested in this kind of personal, personable experience, I would encourage you to contact me.

Costs

I’ve found that the best service to my clients is to work at an hourly rate for editing. This ensures I can take the time necessary to attend to the critical details that make the difference between a submission that is ultimately rejected and a submission that eventually results in publication. Particularly in the field of medicine, since many major English language journals don’t include the option of major revisions to manuscripts after review, it is critically important that upon initial submission manuscripts are as polished as possible.

With this in mind, I charge 5,000 yen per hour for my services. I’m happy to provide estimates of costs via email, along with estimates of turnaround time.

Turnaround time

Please plan on an average turnaround time of two weeks, longer for papers in excess of 30 pages. If you are in need of expedited services, these may be available for an additional fee. Please contact me to check availability and prices.

Access

One of the issues I’ve explored in my own research is that of access to to the academic dialog and the difficulties off-network scholars face when trying to be part of the discussion of their professional discipline. Sensitive to these issues, I realize that not all researchers will have the access to the funding necessary to be able to afford my services at my standard rate. Thus part of my editing time is reserved for discounted and volunteer services. While the demand for such services is always greater than the available supply, I would encourage you to send me an inquiry if you are interested in taking advantage of these services.
